Lolita's Personality

Lolita's Care
For decades activists have been calling for the release of Lolita from performing tricks at Miami Seaquarium and relocation to an open sea pen. Following the 1993 film Free Willy sparked public outrage over the return of orca Keiko into the wild, those who fought for her hoped that Lolita would have a similar fate. Sadly, she never had the chance to return to the sea.
Lolita's captors, known as the Dolphin Company, have ignored veterinary recommendations and continued to put her in danger. They sabotage her health by forcing her to perform for tourists, overexerting her with high-speed circles and head-first dives, which expose her to chlorine, causing her to lose weight and weakening her immune system. Additionally, they place her in a tiny tank that is only one-and-a-half times the size of her natural habitat.
In 2022, the new owner of Miami Seaquarium, who calls Lolita an aunt of theirs, promised to work on plans with a group of Lolita supporters known as Friends of Toki, and the Lummi Tribe, to transport her eventually to open water. The plan would have included a facility located on the west coast of Washington where she could stay for the duration of her life, receive human care and be monitored by researchers. The sanctuary pen was expected to be hundreds of time larger than her Miami house and is surrounded by ocean, not concrete tanks.
If the plan had been successful, Lolita (also called Tokitae or Toki) could still be alive. In the wild, killers whales are social animals and are close to their families until they die. Lolita, who has lived alone at Seaquarium in a cage for 40 years, is now being released into the wild. Activists from across the country have demanded Lolita's release from Seaquarium and then release into the wild.
